2009 Ford Mustang production estimated at just 45,000 units

What's this? News about less Mustangs? Mustang guru Brad Barnett has learned that Mustang marketing manager Fritz Wilke estimates only 45,000 Mustangs will be produced for the 2009 model year. We don't know if the 45 is symbolic of the 45th anniversary of Ford's pony car, but it's significantly less than any other year the Mustang has been produced. In fact, it's only about half that of the 79,280 Mustangs produced in 1992, the current lowest tally, and far below the 134,626 'Stangs sold last year. We can see it now... Ford dealers marking up the rare 2009 Mustang. The most likely situation is that dealers will have trouble selling the remaining Mustangs as customers wait for the updated model in 2010, hopefully with a 5.0-liter V8.

We all know car sales for most models are down across the board due to the increase in gas prices and Mustang sales are no exception but they did show an increase of 1260 units from May-June. This increase put Mustang sales back into the 5 figure range where hopefully they will stay for awhile.

Sales of Mustangs for June of 2008 were 10,893 compared to 12,781 from June of 2007 showing a 14.8% drop in sales from the previous year. Year to date sales for 2008 are 55,053 compared to 77,341 for the first six months of 2007, which is a 28.8% drop.

Sales of Mustangs for July of 2008 were 10,711 compared to 10,684 from July of 2007 showing a 0.3% increase in sales from the previous year. Year to date sales for 2008 Musangs are 65,764 compared to 88,025 for the first six months of 2007, which is a 25.3% drop.

Sales of Mustangs for August of 2008 were 8,197 compared to 11,512 from August of 2007 showing a 28.8% decrease in sales from the previous year. Year to date sales for 2008 Musangs are 73,961 compared to 99,537 for the first eight months of 2007, which is a 25.7% drop.

Wie erwartet, geht's im September weiterhin abwärts - schliesslich rückt auch die Vorstellung des 2010ers immer näher:

September will probably go down as the worst single month of Ford Mustang sales ever in the 45 year history of the Mustang. When the sales figures were posted I flipped through a few of my Mustang books to find similar sales numbers but unfortunately none of them have month to month sales. The only comparable sales figures I could find happend in the early to middle 70’s where sales dropped off quite a bit due to the gas crisis but nothing like what they are now. Yearly sales are also on pace to be the worst ever in the 45 year history of the Mustang.

Sales of Mustangs for September of 2008 were 4,910 compared to 10,266 from September of 2007 showing a 52.2% decrease in sales from the previous year. Year to date Mustang sales are 78,871 compared to 109,803 for the first nine months of 2007, which is a 28.2% drop.

I may have spoke to soon last month when I said September would be the worst month for Mustang sales ever because October Mustang sales got even worse by 224 units. October is now on record as the worst month for Mustang sales ever in it’s 45 year history as an automobile. The future of Mustang sales are in limbo until relief in the form of a refreshed 2010 Mustang hits the showroom floor in early spring.

Sales of Mustangs for October of 2008 were 4,686 compared to 9,156 from October of 2007 showing a 48.8% decrease in sales from the previous year. Year to date Mustang sales are 83,557 compared to 118,959 for the first ten months of 2007, which is a 29.8% drop.

November 2008 Mustang sales now have the official title of being the worst month for Mustang sales ever in Ford’s 45 year history of producing the Mustang. November Mustang sales shattered the previous months record low of 4,686 which was last month by just over a 1,000 units. With no end in sight for these record monthly sales low, I fully expect to see an even lower number for December.

Sales of Mustangs for November of 2008 were 3,667 compared to 7,352 from November of 2007 showing a 50.1% decrease in sales from the previous year. Year to date Mustang sales are 87,224 compared to 126,311 for the first eleven months of 2007, which is a 30.9% drop.

Dezember 2008:

even lower than November’s with the declining economy and across the board auto sales declines. Well, it looks like the bleeding has stopped for now as month to month Mustang sales have risen 360 units or 9.8%. Although this looks good on paper Mustang sales still have a long way to go to get back to respectable levels. Will the 2010 Mustang be able to bring Mustang sales out of the funk, only time will tell.
