(DEARBORN, MI) - In December 2005, StangsUnleashed published a story citing sources from Ford's Romeo engine plant that Ford was testing 4.6L DOHC engines in Shelby GT500 prototypes |story|. By mid-summer 2006, we reported that the 4.6L DOHC engines were actually being developed for an upcoming Bullitt or Mach1 Mustang |story|. What we have not provided up until now, however, are some preliminary engine specifications. According to a reliable source, here are the preliminary 2008 Mustang Bullitt's engine specifications - remember that these are subject to change:
2008.5 Bullitt Mustang Preliminary Data:
• 4.6L DOHC, 400 horsepower naturally aspirated engine.
• Aluminum block with wet sump oiling system.
• Steel crankshaft.
• Ford GT type cylinder heads.
• Ford GT valve covers with special oil fill adapter on the right valve cover.
• Special exhaust manifolds.
• Special intake manifold with the plenum and throttle body located on the back of the intake, much like the original Bullitt.
According to reliable sources here in Dearborn, there's more to the 2008 Bullitt Mustang's recipe than just a 400 horsepower engine though. Ford is said to be putting resources into the Bullitt for the specific purpose of creating a road-racing Mustang, which will be positioned between the Mustang GT and the Shelby GT500. When the Bullitt debuts, it is likely to feature numerous performance enhancements. For starters, the next-generation Bullitt will feature a standard brake upgrade package that is being developed with road racing in mind. Moreover, the Bullitt will also come with a handling package, which is being developed by Ford Racing.
While the 2008 Bullitt Mustang is fulfilling Ford's promise to deliver at least one new Mustang nameplate each year |story|, this isn't really news to Mustang enthusiasts. That's because over the past several years, Team Mustang has had an historical affinity for developing special Mustangs any way. Consider that it was only several years ago that Ford produced both a Bullitt and a Mach1. More recently though, Ford and Shelby have been curbing the appetites of the Mustang faithful with the 2006 Shelby GT-H, 2007 Mustang California Special, 2007 Shelby GT500 and the upcoming Shelby GT. And Ford and Shelby are only just beginning.
More to the 2008.5 Bullitt?
Picture this: A Mustang with a 4.6L DOHC engine along with a road racing suspension, a six speed manual transmission and awesome brakes. Yes, we're still talking about the 2008.5 Bullitt, but think of what would happen if Shelby were to get a hold of it? It's already been speculated that Ford will ship semi-finished Mustangs (Bullitts to be precise) to Las Vegas, where Shelby will message them over and transform them into full-fledged road racing GT350s. Should this happen, it would be the first time since the 1969-1970 model year that both a Shelby GT350 and a GT500 were offered together: a small block GT350 (4.6L DOHC) and a big block GT500 (5.4L DOHC). Of course, it's entirely possible that the Bullitt program could also spawn the revival of the Boss Mustang as well.
The time, date and place for the Bullitt Mustang's introduction have been set. And while we can't provide that information just yet, be rest assured that its mere existence will not be comforting to Scott Settlemeyer, the Camaro's brand manager (who is doing a fine job!) and the Dodge Challenger team. But then again, when has that not been true.
Klingt irgendwie nicht so gut.Not sure this is how Ford would like details of their 2008 Bullitt Mustang released but you can’t keep something bottled up forever. Over at Brads Mustang Site a forum member has posted what he says are the real specifications and information about the mid-year 2008 Bullitt Mustang and they are very dissapointing to alot of Mustang fans who had high hopes for this next generation Bullitt.
In the performance department the stock 4.6L engine will recieve a Ford Racing performance pack to bump horsepower to 312, falling short of the 350-400 horsepower thought by many. The suspension for the Bullitt will get an upgraded steering system, shock/strut tuning and a strut tower brace. The interior will get custom leather sport seating, unique sill plates and bright metal trim along with a custom shifter. For the exterior the 2008 Bullitt will only be available in Highland Green or Black with a unique V6 style grille, rear faux gas cap with Bullitt logo, 18″ Bullitt style wheels and red brake calipers. Other modifications include a 3.73 rear axle and X-pipe exhaust with bright tips. No word on price just yet but Ford plans to produce 7,700 units for the US and Canada.
